{"id":399,"date":"2013-10-14T00:27:25","date_gmt":"2013-10-14T05:27:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/safetga.org\/?p=399"},"modified":"2013-12-14T15:40:46","modified_gmt":"2013-12-14T20:40:46","slug":"manchester-bike-lanes-a-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/safetga.org\/?p=399","title":{"rendered":"Manchester bike lanes: a review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Manchester Avenue has been repaved and restriped from Vandeventer to the City Limits past McCausland, and there are significant new bike lanes along this stretch. \u00a0The project is not quite done &#8211; bike arrows were missing, for instance &#8211; but the bulk of the layout is in place. \u00a0Detailed plans can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/workspaces.acrobat.com\/?d=DyDup0KfV9Wu7zIAK7-lyg\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We rode the new lanes on Manchester a few times on a Sunday afternoon, and share photos and a few thoughts below. \u00a0The section in The Grove district seems well done, even though there are few dedicated bike lanes on this busy and narrow stretch. \u00a0The bike lanes between Kingshighway and McCausland, on the other hand, are inconsistent and confusing, and most worryingly are altogether absent from a significant stretch in the eastbound direction. \u00a0Incorporating bicycle facilities into this major east-west corridor is a welcome gesture, but the ill considered design does not serve cyclists well and represents a lost opportunity to significantly improve St. Louis bicycle infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>(Note that unlike much of the\u00a0<a title=\"New bike lanes on Arsenal: a review\" href=\"http:\/\/safetga.org\/?p=368\" target=\"_blank\">new<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greatriversgreenway.org\/Portals\/0\/Bike%20St%20Louis%20Map\/BSL%20Mtg%20slides%20for%20web--final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">upcoming<\/a>\u00a0Bike St. Louis <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greatriversgreenway.org\/discover\/bike-st-louis.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Phase III<\/a>\u00a0bike facilities, which will be on city streets, Manchster is a state route and this was a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.modot.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">MoDOT<\/a>\u00a0project.)<\/p>\n<h4>Manchester Westbound: The Grove to McCausland<\/h4>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_412\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/safetga.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_3785.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-412\" class=\"size-full wp-image-412\" alt=\"Photo in The Grove, looking westbound toward Kingshighway. This layout is fairly representative of the configuration in the Grove district from Kingshighway to Vandeventer. \u00a0Parking is interspersed with turn lanes, and the single lane carries shared car and bicycle traffic. This is inconsistent and confusing, and for many riders, a lack of continuous bike lanes will be a major barrier to riding along the road.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_416\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/safetga.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_3803.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-416\" class=\"size-full wp-image-416\" alt=\"Many of these lane shifts are apparently caused by parking demands.  On a Sunday early afternoon, there was very little parking.\" src=\"http:\/\/safetga.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_3803.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/safetga.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_3803.jpg 600w, http:\/\/safetga.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_3803-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-416\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eastbound bike lanes disappear where westbound on-street parking is permitted. \u00a0We saw very little demand for parking along this entire stretch, and the eastbound car lane and center turn lanes are unusually wide.  This layout seems driven by competition for limited roadway space between drivers, cyclists, and parking, and here it is obvious cyclists lost.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_421\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/safetga.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_3835.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-421\" class=\"size-full wp-image-421\" alt=\"The lane layout is very confusing right now.
